The course has been designed by sweeps with a plethora of knowledge gained through years of experience in both manual and power sweeping. Set out over 4 days, the trainees will be mentored at a pace that will allow them to absorb the new information/skills and has been crafted to avoid information overload that can occur with short courses.
The chimney sweep training course will provide in-depth knowledge on the road to becoming a chimney technician. From starting up your business to creating a customer base, scheduling your appointments, current legislation and the practical skills that are essential for the modern chimney sweep.

Subjects covered
Health and safety
We cover most aspects of health and safety that affect you carrying out your day to day duties.We don’t offer a full health and safety course as it is only a four-day course, but we cover lifting heavy objects, the correct safety clothing required and the personal protective equipment (PPE) including breathing apparatus, clothing, shoes, workwear and gloves. Different equipment you may be expected to wear on a building site, the dangers of carcinogenic particles and how to avoid them, carrying and disposing of waste soot without getting fines including details of licences that are recommended, we also touch on working at heights. How to do a risk assessment as part of your everyday planning.
Chimney analysis
Here we start to look at the work you may be about to undertake.We show you lots of pictures as to what you might see and how these things can affect the job, we talk about birds nest removal and the licence you will need to remove them during certain times and the procedures needed to make sure you have removed the nest fully to avoid potential repercussions, chimney stack placement including heights needed to conform to building regulations and for the compliance of thatch insurance companies, we discuss and show examples of over twenty different types of cowls, their uses including how you can remedy certain issues using the right cowl type.
Internal inspection
This section covers how to look for signs that the flue is not working correctly and how to fix these issues.We go through the different types of fuels and the deposits that you would get from them if they are burnt correctly and the deposits you would find if they are burnt incorrectly, we explain about flue construction and show you how to size open fires to suit the flues or vice versa, we discuss distances to combustible materials and explain how to resolve a potential fire risk. We show you the different types of blockages you should expect to find during your everyday work and how they can damage the flues, we show the different stages of tar and how to remove them. We go through the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to spot that it is present.
Liner types and chimney sweeping
In this section of the course we discuss in depth the different flue types you may come across, and the different methods of cleaning them.Here we show the different types of liners and their uses as well as the way to tell if a flue is a correct way up, we then go on to selecting the correct rods and heads for traditional sweeping explaining how to select the correct head for the deposits you are trying to remove also how to calculate the size of the flue so you know which size brush you will need. Moving on to power sweeping again we show you how to select the right size rods and heads for the job you will be doing and explain how to alter the direction and stiffness of the brush. Smoke testing is also taught in this section and we explain how extractor fans and other things can affect the draw of a chimney and if any problems are found then what it could be caused by and how to rectify it.
CCTV surveying, Sweeping certificates and Warning notices
This section covers the formats of reporting required and how to deliver the required information correctly.You will be given blank sheets as well as examples of the filled-in documentation.
Document J
This is the last section of day one, where we discuss in-depth document J.We discuss the relevant parts of this document including fireplace recesses, air vents and how to calculate the ventilation requirement, permissible bends in flues, notice plates and where they can be situated, construction and superimposed hearths and sizes, the differences between register and enclosure plates, carbon monoxide alarms placements.
At the end of this course, you will hopefully pass the Competence in chimney sweeping and advanced fault finding assessments, you will be issued with a certificate and photo ID card.

Training courses and conferences
Rodtech reserves the right to make changes to its, Training including information relating to content, timings, date and venue.If Rodtech LTD has to cancel a training course you will be offered a place on an equivalent Course within 12 months. This confirmation will take place 14 days before the course date. If this isn’t suitable for you a full refund will be issued. If Rodtech cancels a course and an alternative cannot be provided, we will refund in full any payment received in respect of that course.
